Every renovation begins with a feeling—an itch that something isn’t quite right. For our clients, it was the sense that their home simply didn’t suit who they were and how they lived. The layout felt confused, the spaces felt dark, and the connection to the outdoors was almost non‑existent. Our clients loved lots about the property, but the house needed a new rhythm, a better flow and a little joy.
This is their story.
What did you want to achieve with your renovation?
At the heart of the renovation was a simple goal: make the house make sense.
- We wanted a proper front door—one that visitors didn’t have to guess at.
- We wanted to live at the back of the house, opening onto the garden instead of feeling shut away from it.
- We wanted a kitchen that worked with us.
- And we desperately needed more storage.
It wasn’t about making the house bigger. It was about making it work better for us.
What is your favourite part of the renovation?
It’s funny how the things you end up loving most aren’t always the big-ticket items.
For C, it’s the handbag cupboard—my tiny slice of organisational heaven—and the hallway. The wallpaper brings so much personality, and the extra wall space means I can finally hang the pictures I’ve been collecting for years.
For M, it’s all about connection: the new flow to the outdoors and the easy link to the mancave. It’s become his favourite daily ritual—stepping outside, coffee in hand, without feeling like he’s leaving the house entirely.
For visitors, the reaction is almost always the same:
“Oh! There’s the front door!”
And then, inevitably, “Wow, the kitchen.”
What problems did you want to overcome with the renovation?
Before the renovation, the house felt… off.
- It was disconnected from the outdoor space.
- The front and back doors were almost side by side on the side of the house.
- The rooms were dark, dated and a little depressing.
- Storage was practically non‑existent.
And then there was the mould—both the smell and the actual mould hiding in the wardrobe.
How was your experience working with Milliken Builders?
Having built a new home before, we knew how rigid the process can feel. This renovation was the complete opposite—in the best way.
We were impressed by the flexibility: nothing felt set in stone until it genuinely needed to be. We could change our minds without feeling like we were derailing the entire project. Also, we loved being able to choose how involved we were in sourcing things like the kitchen and bathroom fixtures.
And perhaps the biggest relief of all: when we were told something would happen, it actually happened.
A home that finally feels like ours
The whole place now feels open, connected and alive, thanks to the structural changes that reshaped how we move through the home. The spaces feel brighter as light streams in through new windows and doors. The outdoors feels like part of our daily life and improved ventilation has eliminated the mould issues completely, leaving the whole space feeling fresh and renewed.
More than a renovation; it’s a reset—a chance to create a home that reflects who we are and how we live.
