extension renovation

We loved helping our clients maximise space and improve functionality in their Woonona Cottage with this extension renovation.

We helped them get better use out of their home by renewing the existing front veranda, creating an open plan living area and adding an outdoor living/entertaining space.

Internal renovation

The internal component of the job involved removing walls between the existing living/dining room and a small reading room at the back of the house. We installed a steel beam so the walls could be removed to create an open plan living, dining and kitchen.

The kitchen was previously positioned in a separate room on the side of the house. We relocated the new kitchen to the back of the house where the old reading room had been. Now the kitchen and dining look out onto the new back veranda. We installed a new window and a three-panel sliding stacker door sourced from Hanlon Windows Australia. This allows the heart of the home to flow freely to the outdoor entertaining area and generous back yard.

We finished the old kitchen room as a bedroom, turning this two-bedroom cottage into a three-bedroom home. We also renovated the old laundry adding a toilet and shower which provides a ‘second’ bathroom. The additional bedroom and bathroom facility will be very helpful for this young, growing family.

The kitchen and laundry joinery and benchtops were supplied by Paiano Kitchens.

Back extension

Firstly, we built a large deck and pergola running the length of the house using Spotted Gum for decking, handrail wall, stairs, privacy screen and sub floor screening. We insulated the pergola ceiling and finished it with V joint pine timber. We installed 3 Velux fixed skylights to provide extra light for daytime use and eight downlights for night-time.

Front renovation

The existing front veranda had a lot going on with no distinct style. It had white siding, brown gutters, variegated mustard and brown tiles and white decorative concrete blocks.

We removed and rebuilt the roof and installed battens and Spotted Gum decking over the existing tiles and stairs. Then we added a timber handrail for the veranda and down the stairs. Finally, we widened the front entry and installed a new door and security screen.

Whole house

We did away with the brown guttering and installed new gutter with Colorbond fascia on the whole house. This freshened up the external and tied the new front and back verandas into the remainder of the house.

This extension renovation updated and increased the functionality of this home while maintaining the cottage style and feel.
